Warship manufacturer Austal hit by cyber security breach

Australian warship maker Austal hit by data security breach and extortion attempt disclosed by the shipbuilder on Thursday at stock exchange.

Hackers stole the 100 gigabytes of data.

Email address, Phone numbers were accessed by hackers and will affect some of the stakeholders.

Hackers also tried for extortion and published some of the drawings on twitter, Federal Investigation authorities said.

Austal is the defence contractor and provides warships, submarine to the US and Middle east and Home Country Australia.

Shipbuilder also confirmed, there is no evidence till date that information affecting national security and commercial have been stolen and will not influence current operations.

Austal till date manufactured more than 300 vessels and having business with 60 countries.

Australian cyber unit said, this may be an organized cyber attack and originated from the central Europe or Middle East and not a state sponsored.

Few weeks back, Pentagon data breach of 30000 personnel happened and information related to employee travel and credit cards have been stolen at one its vendor location.

German Defense minister Ursula von der Leyen said in February 2018 in a European defense conference, It may be a hard to shoot down Eurofighter Typhoon by missile, but its relatively easy to take down by hacking.
